Internet Privacy 101 For Businesses

You have built a great business and over many years have painstakingly earned the respect and confidence of your clients and peers. Despite your hard work, it takes only one unfortunate event to lose that confidence.

One of the most common ways this can happen is through an information privacy breach. Unlike the teenage prank hacking of the past, modern Internet privacy breaches are generally committed by professional criminals for a profit. They sell their stolen information to the highest bidder or use it for illegal activities themselves. An Internet Privacy Crash Cours For Business People

For a small to medium sized business, the cost liability of a significant privacy breach can quickly climb into the hundreds of thousands for dollars. For larger businesses (over $30,000,000 in annual sales), they can be in the millions. *

"Cybercrime represents today’s greatest threat to consumers’ digital lifestyle and to online businesses in general"

Arthur Wong, VP Symantec Security Response

There are three main ways that your internet privacy can be compromised:

1- Infections on company systems

  • Monitoring software that records your activities such as Keyloggers
  • Programs that create a backdoor through your security for attackers and allow them to take control of your systems such as Trojan Horses

2 – Intercepted communications over the internet

  • Unprotected e-mails are like postcards, they can be read by everyone along their route

3 – Records of online activities gathered by third parties

  • Your Internet Service Provider records all your online activities (their records can be compromised or disclosed to third parties without your knowledge)
  • Every site you visit and file you download is recorded by that site’s servers along with your internet address, so it can be traced back to you.

Fortunately it is possible to protect yourself from these threats and the horror story above, but you must actively take steps to safeguard your company’s internet privacy.

There are many Internet privacy protection solutions available that will protect against one or several of these threats, but very few which can protect against all of them.

Protecting your Internet privacy is a complex task and may require 5-6 different programs to do the job right, so do not assume that a simple antivirus or firewall will do the trick.

* Knowledgestorm.com (June 30 2006) conservatively estimates the liability of a privacy breach to be approximately $600 per client record as a result of legal fees, credit monitoring services, liability for damages, employee time and public relations costs. A privacy breach involving a mere 500 client records can result in $300,000 in costs.
